Espresso is produced by forcing heated water under pressure through coffee to extract the flavour containing oils from the beans into your drink. It is these oils that give the tasty crema. These oils are also very sticky and adhere to the coffee grinder, brewing group and portafilter. If the resins from these oils accumulate on your filter basket and in your shower screens (within the group heads), they impact bitterness the coffee flavour
As each shot of espresso is extracted the coffee residue builds up wherever the espresso flows. Unfortunately as soon as the coffee has been extracted, these oils are starting to go stale. Over time the residue becomes visible as a dark brown/black layer.
It is important to clean your machine at least once a day by back-flushing with an espresso machine cleaning agent
Your espresso grinder also needs to be cleaned daily by washing the hopper, vacuuming out the grinds from that day’s use, and brushing down the accessible interior and exterior parts with a soft-bristled grinder brush.
It is recommend running a grinder clean through your grinders every one to four weeks, depending on usage. This helps soak up the oils in your grinder, preventing build-up and extending the life of the burrs.
